Jeffery that is a very unpleasant experience. I think that the worst part,
for an innocent photographer, is that any protest at all
on your part at the time will likely only guarantee excessive heavy handed
treatment of your bag. Quite maddening. We all understand
the need for the inspections but given that the swabbing for explosives
residue was carried out, the additional xraying seems very
unreasonable. This sort of horror story makes me consider never passing film
through an airport any more. Travelling now I'm trying
to have film processed in situ. Bw makes that much harder of course. Maybe
can be mailed to yourself?
I am anecdotally convinced that Leica bodies are much more prominent on the
carry on baggage scanners, due to the high metal
content. I've watched my own on the scren, with the belt reversed so that
they can take another look.

Commiserations

Goon is pretty accurate. When the Domke bag was scanned, a short, pudgy
uniformed lady yelled out "I NEED SOME HELP OVER HERE!!!" which got the
attention of several uniformed men. They yanked both of my bags. The
suitcase, which had all of my unexposed film in it, was tested for
explosives through swabbing it all over and putting the swabs in some sort
of machine. I stood next to it but was told not to move, not to touch the
bag, and not to touch the table. The Domke bag, which apparently caused the
major panic, was hustled out of sight and then returned. I'm going to shoot
test images of the house across the street with one of the 40+ rolls of
unexposed film. They may not have totally cooked those since that bag only
went through the first scanner.

Sounds really bad, Jeffery.

I would have never allowed them to take my carry-on baggage out of my
sight. But there's not much you can do about it when a goon gets in the
mood.
