i think that jim was talking about was the sliding barrel 
guide groove, visible under the f16 marking on the summicron 
in the lowest image of this page:

if forced to turn, the entire collapsing part can turn within
the mount and the smooth barrel can become scored, as my example
summicron shows.  (it was that way when i got it, honest!)

the dymo tape trick was the recommended way to mount
a collapsible on your M5 without fear that in collapsing,
the rear of the assembly would mash the swinging meter
arm.
