There is no way around it. If you are scanning 35mm negs you need a film 
scanner. A Nikon V is only about $600 and well worth it for what we do. 
The degree of enlargement required  from 35mm negs taxes the 
capabilities of a flatbed. This is not just my opinion but that of 
imaging specialists  working in the field. The method I was taught  
emphasized  scanning into the  system and then relying on Adobe 
Photoshop for  all editing  needs.  Even if you are doing b&w  scan the 
negs  as rgb, work on the file and when done then convert a copy to 
grayscale for the web or the print.
