Jim, Yes WATE for the 16-18-21 wide angle Tri Elmar. I've seen that acronym 
in general use. Oh how I would love to own that lens. If
anyone would like to give me one, I promise to call it anything that they 
wish.
Apparently someone thought that WATE was such a great acronym that they made 
up MATE for the original 28-35-50.
Mate in Australian is more or less an informal equivalent of comrade in 
Soviet bloc speak!

Hoppy,

I thought it was WATE, for Wide Angle Tri Elmar.  At least that is what I 
have seen previously.
