Thanks for the comments guys. The camera was one of those new Cosina
rangefinders badged as a Zeiss Ikon. The 50/1.5 Sonnar is also the new
one, but it behaves exactly like the old one (I think Zeiss used the
old formula exactly). I very much like this lens. Shooting it fairly
wide open throws the background sufficiently out of focus to give it a
3-dimensional quality, especially here:

It's a little harder to focus up close when the field depth is very shallow.

It has a known issue with focus shift when changing apertures, but it
is still one of my favorite lenses.
