It was John Collier that had trouble with an early version of the 50/1.4 
Asph lens. I believe that he went through three lenses before trading his 
last lens with me (for a BP 50/1.4 pre-Asph lens plus other consideration).

Although the 50/1.4 Asph lens is not as buttery smooth as my pre-Asph 
version I'm using it quite happily. The current Asph lens has not been 
discontinued to my knowledge.
