Methinks Bernstein was most responsible for the Mahler revival during the
last 20 years of the 20th century. Tilson-Thomas, Bernstein's student, just
recorded Mahler's
5th in 2005 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. That ought to be
interesting.

In the wake of the 3rd Reich, major German orchestras lost touch with
Mahler. They called it sheiss music. Bernstein brought them back to
reality.
