Subject: [Leica] What the World Eats

Parts of this photo essay have been traveling the web, often without
attribution, for some time. The book is great even if the reproduction
isn't absolutely top-notch. You can get it at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Hungry-Planet-What-World-Eats/dp/1580088694/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213666130&sr=8-1

My maternal German ancestry is betrayed by the feeling of slight relief I
derive from the front left of the photo of the Melander family. It startles
me, however, that my own diet looks more like that of someone from a
'developing' country than the 'developed' countries that are shown here.

I'm always interested in dietary references - and there are plenty on the
LuG. My biological research suggests that Western societies are less and
less connected to their environment and sources of production (buy
ironically, more prepared to preserve it as an abstract concept); this is
more evidence to support that. If this really is representative, we are
eating our way to a very unhealthy future for ourselves.
