Thanks Clive,
PS selections were only used when the exposure, highlight and light 
sliders were not enough to get the effect I wanted.
Another trick is to use Levels in PS and pick a white point in the 
background (usually around the neutral grey point in the backdrop, if 
there is one) with the eye-dropper. This should give you a pure white 
background.
Try it out on a shot with dull whites,it can work wonders
