Jerry,

How right you are!  I never baled hay, but used the wire for numerous other 
purposes.  As Sonny said, it was as popular as duct tape for making quick 
and dirty repairs, some of which were useful for years.

My Dad built an outdoor blacksmith's shop under a large sweet gum tree, and, 
during the 30s, sharpened plows, made crude tools, and even created shafts 
to permit me to harness a goat to my red wagon.  Times were tough, but we 
kids didn't know the extent of it at the time.

I still have the old vise that he used at that time, which also appears to 
have been hand-forged, but done commercially.  Only the Acme screw appears 
to be a precise fabrication.
