Adorama agrees with you. Whereas Popflash says the correct cover is 14039, 
and B&H says that the 14040 is for the Summilux-R.

Harrison, I like your suggestion but I think I might try to generalize it a 
little bit and make a hood cover out of sheet aluminum. I have access to a 
shop with the right kind of metal bending machines, and a metal one might 
not fall off so often.
