The old story at Johns Hopkins was that Columbia wanted Milton, but
erroneously offered the job to Ike, who accepted.  They couldn't back down
after that.

You're right.   I always thought it was Milton who was president of 
Columbia, but he was president of Johns Hopkins and Ike WAS Columica's 
president before he became the U.S.'s president.   Thanks for setting me 
straight.
