Hi Jim. I understand. My post was to publicise my own experience. Naturally
you are perfectly entitled to hold your own view! Of course, I knew what you
shoot with and was gently trying to say that it's a bit tough to be negative
about the camera based on what someone else says rather than any personal
experience. M8 knocking is almost a sport on-line.
More often than not we read reports of problems but less from the people who
are pleased and have problem free Leicas. So we end up with perhaps an
unbalanced impression in the on-line forums which is detrimental and unfair
for Leica. The squeaky wheel syndrome and all of that. It would be
instructive to know what the satisfaction rate is amongst the LUG M8 owners.

Sorry to hear that your R2a needs repair. I only know four owners and you
are the third to say that their camera broke! The other guy sells them for a
living.

Pick up your camera and make the best photo you can.

Geoff,

Reason I said this is that a) I know several LUGgers who have had trips back
to Solms with theirs and b) a colleague at a local Leica retailer said that
nearly 100% of the M8s they've sold have made the return trip.

Save for an upgrade, I can't see why any $6200 camera--or even $2000
camera--should have to go back to the factory if it hasn't been abused. To
start advertising the toughness of a pro digital camera that isn't
weather-sealed is particularly risible.

I know I couldn't work with one--I tend to use my cameras rather hard (and
take them to all sorts of seedy places) and it would be only a matter of
short time before something terribly expensive went haywire. As it is, my
beloved Bessa R2a is in the shop for a rangefinder re-alignment--caused by
my less-than-decorous treatment. On the other hand, if there's any
permanent damage it's only a $500+/- camera, and not something approaching
several mortgage payments.

Let's leave it at this: the M8 is a superb instrument, produces incredible
images, and has an earned reputation for finicky performance. Like a classic
Italian or British sports car, it's beyond compare when everything
works--and beyond compare when things don't.

Jim

Jim do you have an M8 that has had to be sent repeatedly to Solms for
repair?
Otherwise this might be seen as an undeserved comment on the camera.
Mine has been faultless thus far, approaching I think, 3000 exposures and
its first birthday. By far the most capable Leica I have owned so far.

Just the facts, ma'am.

"Built to withstand repeated trips back to Solms--that's Leica rugged."
