Tina:
Are Silverfast and Vuescan programs that operate the scanning device? I'm
thinking that they are but I'm not sure. Is the Nikon software different
from these two?

Thanks,
Robert

Robert -

Unless you want to really spend some big bucks and spend a lot of
fiddly time with wet mounts and a used drum scanner, the Nikon LS5000
is as good as it gets for 35mm. I get a lot more out of it with
Silverfast software. Some people use Vuescan but I never could get
that to do much for me. The Nikon software is not bad, but
Silverfast lets you output a RAW file that you can work on like any
other RAW. It makes a big difference with B&W and Kodachrome.
