In that regard
unless discussed with someone with Leica authority beforehand
these projects really have nothing to do with Leica corporate.
We happen to like and use their gear to make photographs.
I don't expect them like or use my photographs in return
(although that would be very nice).

I don't think Alastair undertook FOM2 as a Leica sponsored project
(sure it would have been nice, perhaps even prudent for them to help  
out).

Nor do I think he's undertaking this Centennial project
as anything more than respect for
his preferred kit
and those of like mind.

Neither project seems a "mistake."
Both seem well intended;
irrespective of Leica's interest in the projects
or their interest in we LUGgites.
