There is a little slide switch on SD cards which will prevent writes  
to the card. More efficient than the Tamrac wallet though not as  
visible.

One can always view the images on the camera LCD.

I would also vote for a bunch of SD cards rather than another box to  
carry around and keep charged. The only reason to carry a portable HD  
is in case the flash cards fails.
