The women had to lift their veils and show their faces to an unknown man. With portraits like these, I always like to have a context; either outdoors, in their office, or at home. Somehow these look like someone's trial with a backdrop and studio-flash; rope in some recalcitrant subjects and plunk them down in front of the backdrop and "bang"; pop the flash.
