Nathan,

You are correct that I simplified the problem by the tight crop, but I 
thought it looked better that way.  What I really learned is that my work 
can be improved by cropping the RAW image to something close to final form 
prior to using the adjustments in the RAW converter.  When I did that, I was 
able to improve the histogram of the final image, thereby giving a better 
rendering of the cat's face.
