Good point.

I shoot the Vario 70-180 APO.  Leica says they have a bit of 'head  
space" beyond the infinity mark to allow for temperature variations

A always set the lens at the infinity mark to insure sharp distant  
focus.

Probably the same with most better tele lenses.

Or not.

Just my experience with that particular lens.
