For those who will be near Davis California next Saturday, the California
Raptor Center at UC Davis will host a free Open House:

Volunteer handlers will have several non-releasable birds on display, up
close and personal. Last fall they were very accomodating for visiting
photographers, asking if the lighting and backgrounds were good and
adjusting positions as requested. Photos from last fall's open house:

I expect that the birds on display will be in the shade to prevent
overheating, so higher ISOs will be handy (I used ISO 400). The 350mm
Telyt I used last November was a bit too long (with the DMR) but visitors,
staff and volunteers made every effort to allow me space to back up. I'll
be there.
