"Capping," as in not opening fully?

That would make sense. No light is hitting the film, leaving a "clear" neg, 
which in turn doesn't block any light to the paper...leaving a black band.

As for the shutter speeds, I did bracket at different speeds, which forces 
me to guess. But, I was mostly working at 1/60, 1/125 and 1/250. And, I 
think the shots with narrower bands were at 1/125 and the larger black bands 
were at 1/250...
