There are 2 problems here that are only slightly related.

1) Get your data off your damaged disk.

2) Restructure your computing world so that this never happens to you again.

It's important not to confuse these two. NAS (Network Attached Storage) is a 
potential solution to (2) above, but is unrelated to (1). The universal 
cords mentioned by several people are a solution to (1) but not (2).
