In Ohio, the Wood County Historical Society Museum is located in the
old county home, the "poorhouse". On the grounds is the old "Lunatic
House" where people were housed then there weren't any better ideas
about what to do with them. One could be housed in the Lunatic House
for such "disturbances" as chronic fighting to post-partum depression
to masturbation to epilepsy, in addition to illnesses we recognize
today as true, serious mental illness. It also served as temporary
jail space when the jail was full. It was state of the art for the
times and probably as humane as could be expected for the turn of the
20th century. Its last occupancy was sometime in the early 1960s.

C&C as always....

Sue
