Sigh - manual lens selection on the M9, but not M8:

" .....Don't have a 6-bit coded lens? No problem. Leica has finally
implemented a manual lens selection option. This has been on the
most-requested feature list for quite some time, and, with new firmware
development, could finally be implemented on the M9. Apparently,
retrofitting the M8 firmware with this option wasn't a practical
possibility. ...."

Interesting report though.
