Many commercial photographers
use their studio and location work efficiently.

Back in the day:
If I was commissioned to produce a studio shot
let's say of products dropping into water like this:
<http://imagist.com/lma/pg09_lmaproduct.html>
I'd use the set up to drop all kinds of stuff into the set-up
(off the client's clock of course)
and the shots made on my own time would go to "stock."
Yet the studio set was commissioned by a client.

I assume that travel photographers (like Tina) do the same.
They may be "somewhere" for one purpose;
achieve that purpose;
and while "there" create as much "stock" as possible.

I knew one studio photographer who, if not booked,
worked tirelessly on stock "concept" images;
and another who thought anything he shot
and which was "not used" by the client (out-takes)
became available for stock use.

Depending on the size of the studio
it may have assistants doing post processing, key-wording
and interpolation tasks.

In the end -
Earning significant income from stock "use fees"
requires diligent, efficient effort;
and a very good agency.
