Good idea, Greg, but a week is not that long to get to grips with 
something as complex as a modern DSLR (unfortunately).

The long R glass is the stuff that most benefits from this choice, 
especially if you get an alternate screen from Britescreen or Canon 
that allows better manual focus. The long glass is often used wide 
open anyways, so that the lack of auto diaphragm isn't that big a 
deal, and metering is more accurate. Also it's only some of the 
shorter FL that have problems with the Canon mirror.
