Subject: [Leica] Why the mad rush to use Canon or Nikon bodies?

I hope that I didn't poison myself in the darkroom. I've always read up
on toxicity and handling of darkroom chemicals and I've coupled that
with using common sense. Hopefully my most dangerous encounter in the
darkroom occurred the time I discovered a brown recluse spider under an
easel.

I certainly understand why some people dislike the chemical darkroom.
OTOH, I don't value my inkjet images as much as I value my silver
prints. If I were a fine art photographer wanting a niche' I'd go
chemical printing and take my chances.

Digital photography is main stream. It's great for journalism,
documentary work and general picture taking. But (archival) ink is
carbon based, whereas chemical prints usually come in silver, platinum
or gold. Maybe I'm crazy, but I prefer photographs made from precious
metals. Sadly I may not appear very green (although my first BW inkjet
prints sure did).

There is plenty of good data. I've never seen a link between any
common darkroom chemicals and pancreatic cancer, but smoking and heavy
alcohol consumption are big risks. Having worked with quite a few old
school journalists, I think maybe that was their main risk factor for
pancreatic cancer. It's variable for other diseases.

One interesting thing that there is decent data to support is the
results of long term exposure to the neurotoxic effects of phenolic
developing agents like pyrogallol, hydroquinone and catechol. It may
not be a coincidence that Edward Weston used pyro developers without
gloves and ended up with a very nasty and rapidly advancing for of
Parkinson's disease.
