By the time I had them, for 15" rims, they were very, very old stock, and
brittle as hell.I would slam on the brakes and lock them. But to that I had
to speed up first. I was young, and insensible to any kind of danger then.
Tires used to sit out in the sun on a rack for ever once upon a time. They
don't that anymore.
Once those were gone I went to Dunlop and Bridgestone.
I could also get a Corvair, passenger side, in the air on a turn.
But you're right about them having a hell of a grip. A friend of mine used
to race his Peugeot 404, with those earlier Michelin tires on, up and down
Mulholland and Sunset.
Tuesday, I had a shoot in Thousand Oaks at 10AM. A pig of a drive through
the Westside AND the Valley. I left earlier and went up the coast to Malibu
Canyon, and then to the 101. A nicer drive and very quick shortcut. But as I
drove by Mulholland, once Malibu had turned into Las Virgenes, I couldn't
help but get a nostalgic carbuncle to bubble up.
