Well, well, well!
I'd though you'd throw the kitchen sink with these exceptions to the  
rule.
For one, if they were starting out today, most of them wouldn't get  
hired. A basic requirement  today, is competency with PS. Even though  
the basic job is that of a shooter, and not a frakking lab tech.
Except for the small papers, where the sales staff and writers bring  
their P&S, the majors require a college degree from an accredited PJ  
dept.
Universities have been known to lose their PJ accreditation for not  
following guidelines. And no, the guideline is not adhering to the  
principles of "truth."
On the other hand; Gene Smith was fired by LIFE, in the middle of a  
war no less, for bringing his own ideas to the job; the guy that hired  
Lange, balked at hiring Lewis Hine,; etc.
