Hi Tina,
Yep that has far more to do with it than concerns about flashes 
deteriorating the paintings or whatever.

I'm surprised many of you haven't realized that's behind 99.9% of the "NO 
PICTURES!"

If you don't believe Tina, then the next time you visit a museum or gallery 
stop for a moment in "THE GIFT SHOP" on the way in before you do your tour. 
The chances are you'll see reproductions of all the cool stuff you'll want 
to photograph as you stroll through the place, but wont be allowed to.
