Get a rolling backpack, its more flexible - I carry 2xD300, 17-55,
70-200 and 200-400 plus  a 13" laptop and other odds and ends like
TCs, extension tubes, flash, beamers etc on my wild life trips and use
this - I have not yet had a problem on a flight:

The other thing I do is to carry the 200-400 in its own case, which is
actually very nice, and use a smaller model for the rest, but that is
two carry ons:

I am planning to get a netbook for my next trip next month to cut weight.
