IMHO pointing fingers at a particular sport or activity is a good way to 
evade the real problem.  It's the billions of little choices made each day 
by everyone that make a difference, and if the fuel cost spike a couple of 
years ago is any indication, very little aside from a dent in the wallet 
influences those decisions on a significant scale.
