PS in looking over the other reactions, i notice that, tellingly, the key
word is "nice". We don't get up every morning saying today I want to
achieve niceness and make something nice.

In my youth, in the U.S., if a woman said you were "nice" it was time to
move on; the situation was hopeless. At 30, it turned out, if they thought
you were nice and had a good income they would strongly consider marrying
you; but at 20 the only thing the word meant was that they had no intention
whatsoever of sleeping with you.
