Tina, I had the same problem when I used Expression Media. The solution I 
came up with was to run all the DNG files through the Adobe DNG convertor, 
selecting the option for full size previews - I believe the problem lies in 
the size of the embedded Jpeg contained in the DNG.

However since ditching EM, I read that it's possible when importing to tell 
it to rebuild a preview, rather than use the embedded one. No idea how to do 
this as I no longer have the software.
