A practical answer.... not a pro's answer.

Restating the question.....
You are not a pro or you would not have asked the question.  YOu would have 
known the answer for a pro.

You have someone you work with or who is a friend.  This person likes one of 
your photographs.  Enough that he wishes to put it on a thank you note card 
for his business.  The person will make about 100 cards.  You wish to know 
how much to charge him.

Let's look at the options......
Value:
Do what Tina said and find out how much a pro would charge for one time 
licensed rights.
Pick a number out of thin air and try to charge that much.

Seems like Tina's approach is the winner.  Now you know the "value" to a pro 
for rights.

The person will make 100 note cards.  How much will he spend on printing?  
Maybe $500?  Maybe ( in todays Internet enabled printing world) $100?  How 
much do YOU feel your intellectual property rights are worth to someone 
compared to the total cost of the project?  10%?  25%?  ( in dollar terms, 
somewhere between $10 and $125).

You have stated this person is a friend or colleaque.  So the relationship 
is not based on your taking pictures for hire for him.....  And I can tell 
that you are very touched by this opportunity to have your work shown off, 
and appreciative of his intents.

Now you must approach him to get your cash.....  You have 4 numbers....  
Agency fee; $10; $125; some other number.

So you have the dimemma...... get maybe $10 in cash and possibly piss off a 
friend or wreck a business connection OR give him the rights for free and 
bind your relationship further......

Seems pretty straightforward to me.......  Limit the exposure, GIVE him the 
rights, ask him to buy you lunch.

I made and distributed some photo greeting cards from Paris to friends and 
colleagues.  Now one of these folks is interested getting a picture that I 
used, for his business thank you cards.  He would like to purchase the use 
of the picture to have a printer make 100 or so small (~4" x 5")cards.  He 
will arrange for the printing. Do you have any idea what I should charge for 
such a use. I have never sold photos for this use before. What should the 
agreement specify about how long it can be used, etc.?
