I fear the USA has a very protected education system. Americans only get to 
know much about the outside world if they are interested and search out the 
information themselves. Neither the education system nor the media go much 
on what is outside the borders of their country. Which is fair enough and a 
valid choice.
It does seem strange to non-US people when they read some stuff written by 
Americans and the assumptions therein. That migrant mother may be poor by 
modern or even contemporary US standards, but in world terms she was 
probably one of the top 5% in wealth terms. Assuming that it tells all is a 
peculiarly American viewpoint.
