I'm a fan of auto-ISO, but I have its parameters set up not to go more
sensitive than 1250 (since that's about the limit for reliably
technically-darned-nice M9 images). I tried a couple of frames that
way, saw the shutter speeds had to be too slow and blurry, and set
2500 manually. Because there just wasn't much light there.

And I didn't want to extend auto-ISO down to 2500, because I might
forget and leave it that way, and I usually really want to avoid
2500. And it'd be more menu depth to navigate.

Chris's i-telephone in the same light:

Maybe a little more light. We brought in an extra candle.
I don't see EXIF data with the i-ISO.

But your new D700 will be able to see in the dark like... a bat or
something. Congratulations on the large-sensor step. Happy birthday,
whenever that is.
