Frankly, I don't know, Richard.
It could be a simple response as a scar, or some proliferation, similar to
cancer.
In any case, the rest of this big tree, trunk, branches and leaves, enjoyed
a perfect health.
In fact, it seems an extra and hard protection: elephants don't eat its bark
no more.
But I'm not a botanist ;-)

Evolution at work! So exactly what purpose do they serve? Stop the elephants
from eating the bark, or "sacrifice" themselves to the elephants?
