I've used the ZM 21mm f/2.8 for about a year and a half now. it's one
of my favorite lenses. I had a period when I thought about selling it
when I was using an RD1 and never grabbed the 21mm. Now that I've got
the M9, it's fantastic.
I find that the coding for a 21mm Elmarit pre-ASPH works very well and
takes away all the color fringe vigneting. I've tried the ASPH Elmarit
and it does not work as well with the ZM. The 18mm super elmar code is
good but I don't think as good as the 21mm. I haven't tried the 24mm
Elmarit coding yet but from what I've read with its compatibility with
the 15mm CV lens, it may overcorrect and vignette with hot corners, not
sure.
The falloff is not bad at all with no coding but it's noticeable. After
coding the lens, it's fantastic. Just a little bit of falloff but we
expect that in a superwide like this.
I highly recommend the 21mm zm lens. The ONLY thing you may "lose" is
the insane build quality of the Leica Elmarit lens, but you also save
well over $1000 in the price difference between the two. The ZM lens is
very well made and I can't find any distortion.
I only use an empty deep 46mm filter ring as a hood since the hoods for
these carry almost the same price as some of the Leica variants. This
lens is really resistant to flare anyways, so the biggest thing is
protecting the front element.
Heavystar on ebay sells some cheap screw in hoods which work well if
slightly modified I think. I have the 46mm "wide" metal one which
worked well on the M8 but mechanically vignettes a small amount on the
M9. I may just dremel out the offending corners and make my own
flower petal type hood for it. Until then the filter ring is fine.
It's an awesome lens.
