I'm afraid that I am the lone dissenting voice here.
Whilst I like both, I  prefer the first, uninverted picture.  The second 
was just a bit too weird for me.

I think the B&W works well, though the colour version could be 
interesting too - almost impressionistic.

As far as the B&W is concerned, I wonder whether simulating a 
yellow-green or green filter would improve the rendition even more? 
This can be simulated in Lightroom by increasing the yellow and green 
sliders.  I suspect that there is also a filter in Silver Efex that does 
the same thing.  Knocking the contrast back a touch (similar to dropping 
the paper grade by say half a grade) may also lift the picture by 
putting more detail into the darker areas.
