Essential, you're perfectly right.
That's why it is always Alice and me-self ;-)
The internet is full of ressources.
It sure takes a little time, but rewards you with so much more  
pleasure than being driven like cattle hoping from place to place.

All this with photography in mind.

I find it disastrous when I view photos taken on such tours, where the  
inevitable flashy new hat just bought by fellow traveler Maggie pops  
into the frame, or the "locals" in the picture carry P&S.
Or worse, having to wait ages until a group from the same coach as  
yours has finished commenting their kids, health, or dinner concerns,
and at long last clears the view you want before the sun has fully set.
Sounds ferocious?
Photographically?
