I had to take some pictures to illustrate a new graduate program organized
around digital culture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM),
Media, Cinema and Digital Studies. This is one of the specialized tracks
offered through the English Department. The program moves beyond the
traditional writing, literary and critical boundaries of English, morphing
with disciplines such as communication, art history, anthropology, sociology
and information studies, but also digital culture broadly ? topics like
texting and cell phone usage, gaming studies and multimedia content.

I got to have fun lighting these.

For this picture of two professors, our designer later added an image to the
background from one of their publications, but I like the original version
for me. I love black backgrounds and semi-backlighting:

Two 650 watt Lowel Omni-Lights, with half scrims, plus a 1000 watt
Tota-Light bounced off the studio wall behind the camera.

In this, my favorite shot from the story, we were to show two faculty and a
student having popcorn and watching a movie on a laptop in the Film
Department screening room:

Two 650 watt Lowel Omni-Lights, with quarter scrims, two 150 watt
Photogenic Mini-Spots, plus a bare 15 watt household bulb held over the
laptop keyboard by the student to simulate the glow from the screen.
