I remember walking around the "Workers" exhibition in the mid-90s, you could
see a marked leap in quality of the B&Ws from a certain year. They changed
from standard light grey to dark grey prints to full tonal range and lovely
detail in the late '80s AFAIR.

You may not be able to take photos like his, but much of the tonal
representation is about the professional who develops his film and his
printer - both of whom are available to everyone, if you're willing to pay.
