Hi Frank,

I got some good inputs from friends on the Olympus list. My machine is a
Dell desktop, purchased in 2005. The Serial ATA drives of that era were
referred to as SATA 150, and had a speed of 1.50 Gbps. These drives are no
longer produced.

The current SATA drives, referred to in various ways, have a speed of 3.00
Gbps. Though some sources refer to them as backward compatible, it appears
that this is only possible if the drive is equipped with a jumper that can
be repositioned to limit the transfer speed to 1.50 Gbps. And, I have read
of cases where that did not work with some controllers.

So, the choices appear to be:
1) Buy a refurbished drive, if it can be found, from whatever source can
provide it
2) Buy a modern drive that is jumper-equipped, and hope it will work with
the Dell controller
3) Buy a new or refurb Win7 box, and replace a lot of software.

As I said, I am still working the problem. Any supporting information would
be appreciated.
