I agree with you that these "invented" holidays have a mildly disconcerting 
commercial smell about them.
Yet - I enjoy their nudging me to give dad or mom or lover a little extra 
thought and perhaps even a little gift.

There you go - that's all there need be to it.
I also enjoyed a two and a half hour brunch with my daughter, granddaughter, 
and and son-in-law.
Delightful - nothing wrong with that.
Nobody over-spent - yet all had a wonderful time
