Yup. Wrong typing, right order. 9 pin to 6 pin. Correct.

Are you sure the Nikon is 4 pin? I would expect it to be a 6.....

FW400 is far preferable to USB2 ;-)

Thank you John, Chris, and Dennis.

I have ordered a 6 foot 9-4 pin Firewire cable to make the adaptation work.
Amazon, about $11 USD, from Amazon.

Without your help, I would have purchased a dozen wrong cables, connectors,
etc.

If only I could have afforded a CS5000, with its USB interface... oh
well....

Yes, a cable like
http://www.cablesdirect.co.nz/catalog/entry?page_number=2&entry=64 (not much
use to you as in NZ) or a 6-6 with an adaptor like Dennis posted. I have
several FW400 devices in my FW800 ports.

John.. are you saying that if I bought a new, correct cable, I can plug a
FW400 Coolscan 4000 into a FW800 card and everything should work just fine??

Present cable is FW 400 with a "pointy" end....looks like 6 connector pins
inside....

If correct, I need a 6 pin FW400 to FW800 cable.....

Yes, the fittings are different but you can get adaptors or cables with
different ends.

FW400 4 pin - small one, no power
FW400 6 pin - normal one, elongated
FW800 9 pin - squarer fitting

I have a PC and a Nikon Coolscan 4000 scanner. Worked fine on my old Dell,
but, for my new computer, I need to order a PCI Express Firewire card.

They make Firewire 400 and 800 cards. The Coolscan is a Firewire 400
machine. Can I plug a Firewire 400 peripheral into a Firewire 800 connector
and card?
