My understanding is that occasionally formating your card improves write 
speed.
As to whether or not this is a bottleneck for the M8/9, I don't know. For a 
high 
speed, multi-shot camera this could be an issue.

Bob,

Contrary to popular practice, I never reformat my cards.  I download the 
images to my computer, then let the computer delete the images from the 
card.  I have never had a problem.  I think this is what they are 
recommending.
