Hi Nathan,
You're going at the hight of tourist season; August before Labor Day. I
don't think you will find much less expensive accommodations other than
Tina's suggestion.
You can try the Tanaya Lodge at the south of the park. You will be about
40-50 minutes from the Valley floor (depending on traffic). I don't know
what their rates are right now. You are much closer to the Mariposa Grove
(giant redwoods) and Glacier Point (a heck of a lookout) and you go through
tunnel view (spectacular) on your way down to the valley.
If you leave early from the Bay Area and spend the day in the valley floor,
a night at Tanaya Lodge, and then back to the Valley the next day and out,
that may work.
Yosemite View Lodge is a very good place to stay; Steve Barbour and I
stayed there one February. As long as you're paying that price though, I
would take Geoff's recommendation and stay in the Valley. The Lodge at
Yosemite Falls is terrific and be sure to have dinner in the Mountain Room
where there are gorgeous prints by local photographers.

Any chance of changing your venue to Carmel/Big Sur? I'd be happy to try to
work out meeting you there.
Best,
Bob
