Longer is gooder. Longer working length makes sense if you want a *dedicated
* macro lens. DoF can be profoundly different for a start and you are less
likely to scare your subject or squash it onto the front element ;-)

Conventional wisdom was that around a 100mm was the choice for a full frame
camera. That works better again on a cropped frame camera.

More recently 180 and 200mm is suggested on full frame cameras.

But you may want a lens that does a lot of things well you might have a
different answer.
