Jim,

Here is another bit of information.  I searched online for information on 
the bridge.  I found a nicely typed document:

Bridges of the Upper Tombigbee River Valley
Historic American Engineering Record
National Park Service
Department of Interior
Washington, D.C.

It gives more than 100 pages of information on bridges over the years, and 
the reasons and politics behind them, especially during the Reconstruction 
years in North Mississippi.

The James Creek bridge was built primarily because there was a stagecoach 
line that made regular trips north from Columbus, MS to the upper reaches of 
the state near the Tennessee River.  This stage had to pass over James 
Creek.

While the bridge was probably rebuilt over the years, it is interesting to 
read the following quote.  "The bridge on the Columbus-Aberdeen road over 
James creek cost $500 in 1844; the covering cost an additional $345 in 
1849."
